YoungBoy Never Broke Again had to be escorted by police after the first of two sold-out shows at the Smothie King Center in New Orleans.
As seen in several videos circulating on social media, the rapper walked the streets of New Orleans following the show and appeared to be doing so with minimal security. Some of the videos showed a mob of fans attempting to crowd around him in the chance of meeting him or getting a photo, and police had to get involved to break up the crowd. He was reportedly taken to his vehicle by the officers, who made sure no one prevented him from leaving.
As reported by NOLA, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) announced plans to increase police presence in the city’s French Quarter and Central Business District for YoungBoy’s sold-out shows at the Smoothie King Center on Sunday (Oct. 19) and Monday (Oct. 20). The police presence includes armored vehicles, drones, and enforcement vehicles throughout the areas surrounding the venue.
NOPD Assistant Superintendent Hans Ganthier urged concert attendees not to bring firearms to the show. “This is not an event where you need to bring your gun. If it is, I think you should think twice about coming to the CBD and the (French) Quarter,” he said. Other police departments from cities that YoungBoy has played on his current tour provided NOPD with information that prompted “concern” from the department, which is why they’ve created such a “robust” security plan for the two shows.
Meanwhile, the Smoothie King Center has stressed that all bags and purses have been banned for the two concerts. Per the venue’s information page, attendees with only cellphones, wallets/cardholders, and keys will be allowed into shows, and the belongings must be carried “on your person/pockets only.”
The news comes after three of YoungBoy’s shows on the Make America Slime Again tour were canceled, one in Chicago due to security concerns, and one in Detroit due to “unforeseen circumstances.” The most recent cancellation was his show in Atlanta, scheduled for Saturday (Oct. 18). His first sold-out show in Atlanta took place without issue, but the city of Atlanta did issue a statement denying that the Baton Rouge rapper was awarded a key to the city.
