During a show in Atlanta, YoungBoy Never Broke Again was seemingly awarded a key to the city, but Atlanta officials denied he received such an honor.
In a statement, which can be read below, the Mayor's Office of Film Entertainment & Nightlife (AMOFEN) denied issuing YoungBoy with a key to the city of Atlanta.
"While we respect all individuals and agencies who choose to recognize cultural or community impact, the City of Atlanta and the Mayor's Office of Film, Entertainment, and Nightlife were not involved in this presentation," reads the statement. "This recognition was made by representatives of Fulton County and the State of Georgia."
AMOFEN also stressed that the City of Atlanta has not issued a key to the city in "a very, very long time" and does not currently do so. "We do hope everyone enjoyed the concert," the statement concludes. "This statement is issued simply to ensure accuracy and transparency surrounding public information."
As seen in several videos circulating on social media, NBA YoungBoy was awarded a key to the city of Atlanta. After receiving the apparent honor, he launched into a performance of his 2022 track “I Hate YoungBoy,” where he takes aim at prominent Atlanta rappers like Lil Baby and Gucci Mane, making his decision to perform the track even more provocative. The song also disses other rappers like Lil Durk, King Von, Quando Rondo, and Boosie Badazz.
On the song, YoungBoy disses Gucci rapping, "Used to fuck with Gucci 'til I seen he like them pussy ni--as/Mama know I'm ruthless, talkin' stupid, make me bust a ni--a." He takes shots at Lil Baby rapping, "Baby with 'em, 4PF, four poles firin'/Want me for to die? Tell that pussy, 'Cross the line.'"
During the show, YoungBoy was joined onstage by Fulton County Probate Judge Kenya Johnson, Georgia State Representative Ingo Willis, and Fulton County Commissioner Marvin Arrington. He received the key for his influence on hip-hop, his work on anti-gun violence initiatives, and philanthropy. The Baton Rouge rapper thanked the officials for the honor, which comes amid his nationwide MASA tour.
The last time a rapper was awarded a Key to the City of Atlanta was in 2004, when Ludacris was given the honor for his work under the Ludacris Foundation.
Earlier this month, Birdman suggested that YoungBoy’s live performances will be a billion-dollar enterprise within a few years. “Three to four hundred million, easy,” he said. “If you ain’t talking that, don’t even come. And look, in two years, a billion dollars.”
