Former NFL running back Doug Martin, a two-time Pro Bowler known for his breakout seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died at the age of 36.
Initial reports confirmed Martin’s passing over the weekend but did not provide details about the circumstances. However, a new report from the New York Post now states that Martin’s death followed a police encounter in Oakland, California.
According to authorities, officers responded to a reported home break-in around 4:15 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, October 18. Police said Martin was experiencing a “medical emergency” when they arrived.
During a “brief struggle” with officers who attempted to detain him, Martin allegedly resisted arrest, became unresponsive, and was transported to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
Oakland’s Fox affiliate reported that it remains unclear what prompted the initial medical episode. Police have not provided further information about why Martin was taken into custody.
As of now, the official cause of death has not been confirmed, and the case is under investigation by multiple agencies. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
Martin’s family released a statement acknowledging his death, writing: “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed.”
Martin was drafted 31st overall by the Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft after a standout career at Boise State. His rookie year quickly cemented his place in franchise history, with 1,454 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns, and an additional 472 receiving yards. That season earned him Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.
He earned a second Pro Bowl nod in 2015 after rushing for 1,402 yards, once again ranking among the league’s top backs. Over the course of seven NFL seasons—six with Tampa Bay and one with the then-Oakland Raiders—Martin totaled 5,356 rushing yards, 30 rushing touchdowns, 1,282 receiving yards, and two receiving touchdowns.
The Buccaneers released a statement on Sunday honoring their former star: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”
