Cam Newton is heading back to ESPN, this time for the long run.
According to an official press release from the network, the former NFL MVP has inked a multi-year agreement that locks him in as a regular voice on First Take, ESPN’s morning debate mainstay.
His first appearance under the new deal came when First Take set up at Norfolk State University as part of its fall HBCU tour. That stage is fitting for Newton, who has deep family ties to HBCUs and has frequently spoken about wanting to spotlight their football programs.
“I am excited to be back with the First Take team and share my voice on all things sports,” Newton said in ESPN’s release. “This is an incredible opportunity for me to connect with fans and bring my passion and knowledge to a show I’ve always admired.”
Newton isn’t new to the desk. He appeared during last year’s tour and quickly stood out for his candor and energy alongside Stephen A. Smith, Molly Qerim, and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo.
ESPN executives see that as a natural fit. “Cam Newton is a unique talent who is authentically himself, and that’s a key ingredient for success on First Take,” said David Roberts, Executive Vice President of Sports News and Entertainment.
The setting also reflects Newton’s own vision. He’s floated the idea of creating an HBCU version of College Gameday that travels to campuses across the country.
“I wanna be a part of the Black College Football Gameday,” Newton said recently, per ClutchPoints, pointing to schools like Tuskegee, Jackson State, and North Carolina A&T as destinations he’d love to highlight.
Football fans know Newton for his 2015 MVP season with the Carolina Panthers and his decade-long impact on the NFL. Now, his post-playing career is shaping up around commentary and culture — with ESPN giving him the platform to do both.
