Former NFL player Darryl “Buster” Skrine is facing serious charges in Georgia after police say he orchestrated an elaborate fraud scheme that targeted women across the country.

Roswell police confirmed to FOX 5 Atlanta that Skrine, 36, was arrested earlier this week. He is now facing 18 counts, including identity fraud, theft by taking, and financial transaction card fraud.

According to investigators, the former cornerback used online dating platforms to meet women and persuade them to send him large sums of money.

Detectives allege Skrine convinced victims he was experiencing financial trouble and promised he could repay them using money from his NFL pension. Instead, police say the funds were used for personal luxuries, including travel, short-term rentals, and gift cards.

Authorities have already identified victims in Wisconsin, North Carolina, and New York who collectively lost about $300,000. Officials believe there could be more victims across the United States.

The investigation began in July after one woman came forward to report suspicious financial activity tied to Skrine. Roswell police say that tip led to uncovering a much wider pattern.

“This is not an isolated case,” detectives said, noting they are continuing to collect evidence and encourage additional victims to reach out.

Skrine’s legal troubles extend beyond the U.S. Canadian authorities say he is also wanted in connection with a $100,000 check fraud case in Ontario. Durham Regional Police arrested him in 2023, but he allegedly removed his GPS monitor while out on bail and fled back to the U.S.

Before his arrest, Skrine was best known for his decade-long career in the NFL. After playing at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2011. He later suited up for the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Tennessee Titans before retiring in 2022.

Roswell police are working with Canadian officials to determine how Skrine will face charges in both countries. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Fields at 770-640-4455 or leave an anonymous tip at StopCrimeATL.org.
