When a top celebrity dies, fans immediately wonder how. That's especially true when an A-lister like Diane Keaton dies without any public warning that the star was sick or in failing health.
However, three days after her sudden death on October 11, the cause of death for Keaton, 79, remained a mystery. There was was no sign that Keaton died of anything but natural causes, to be clear, but the exact nature of her death has not been released.
Now her cause of death has been released. Keaton died of pneumonia, her family told People.
Complex has contacted the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office seeking an update on Keaton's cause, manner of death, and any autopsy.
"We do not currently have a decedent by that name in our records. Please keep in mind that not all deaths are processed as Medical Examiner cases," a medical examiner's response says. The spokesperson said they also don't have a listing for Diane Hall, Keaton's real name. They suggested contacting the Department of Health, which Complex has done.
In the days since Keaton was taken from her California home by ambulance, there have been a few details that trickled out about her condition. They came mostly from friends. The friends paint a picture of Keaton as thin but also enjoying life.
Carole Bayer Sager, Keaton's friend and a famous songwriter, gave the most detailed account of Keaton's deteriorating health in her final weeks. Sager told People that she saw Keaton several weeks before she died. She also said that Keaton had been living in Palm Springs after the Pacific Palisades wildfire.
“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin," Sager told People. "She had lost so much weight."
Ed Begley Jr., who starred with Keaton in the movie Book Club, said he saw her at Jack Nicholson's birthday party. He wasn't clear on the date, but Nicholson's birthday was in April, People reported.
"I saw her fairly recently at Jack Nicholson's birthday party, and it was good to see her there,” Begley told People.
Dispatch audio indicated first responders were sent to Keaton's home around 8:08 a.m. for a report of a "person down," according to TMZ.
Another friend of Keaton's, whose name was not provided, told People that Keaton had declined suddenly.
“She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” that friend said, indicating that the decline was "unexpected."
