University of Miami star linebacker Adarius Hayes is facing serious charges after police say his reckless driving caused a crash that killed three people earlier this year in Largo, Florida.
According to the local NPR station, WUSF, Largo Police confirmed that Hayes, 20, surrendered himself on Friday morning after investigators secured a warrant for his arrest.
He was booked at Pinellas County Jail on three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving with serious bodily injury. He posted $350,000 bond and was released that afternoon.
The case stems from a collision on May 10, 2025, near Orange View Drive and Ridge Road. Detectives allege Hayes was driving a Dodge Durango at nearly double the posted limit—clocked at 78.9 mph in a 40-mph zone—when he cut across several lanes of traffic in what authorities described as a “rapid and dangerous maneuver.” Moments later, his SUV struck a Kia Soul that was making a legal turn.
The crash victims who perished were identified as 78-year-old Gail Price, 10-year-old Jabari Elijah Solomon, and 4-year-old Charlie Herbert Solomon Riveria. A fourth passenger survived but was hospitalized with severe injuries.
Police spokesperson Megan Santo said the investigation found that Hayes’ “egregious speed, aggressive and reckless lane changes, and complete disregard for surrounding traffic conditions” directly caused the deadly outcome.
Court records show this wasn’t Hayes’ first time cited for unsafe driving. He had prior speeding violations, multiple tickets for improper lane changes, and even a temporary license suspension in 2023 after failing to complete a required driving course.
Hayes, a former standout at Largo High School, was one of the top-rated linebackers in the country when he committed to Miami in 2023. He played in 12 games as a freshman, mostly on special teams, before earning a larger role heading into this season.
The University of Miami has suspended him indefinitely from all football-related activities while the case moves forward.
