Maluma joins Bradley Cooper and Vinícius Júnior as an ambassador of BOSS Bottled Beyond, a new scent that aims to blend “innovation and performance.”

For the Don Juan artist, the chance to be a part of BOSS’s rollout of the first premium ginger-leather fragrance stands as an opportunity to celebrate a unique sense of timelessness. Speaking with Complex, Maluma pointed to the complementary nature of the collaboration, stating that his music boasts a similar quality.

You're the first artist to ever perform for a live in-person audience at the top of the Empire State Building. How does it feel to make history in that way?

Well, it's beautiful. I mean, I always dream about having these moments in my life and my career. Sometimes I feel that I leave too fast, so I don't actually realize when all these big events are happening. But now that I'm a dad, everything changed. So I'm more conscious. I want to celebrate it, I want to enjoy it, and that's actually why we're here. So it represents a lot for me, for my family, my culture, my country, Colombia, you know, no one, no one thought that this was gonna happen 14 years later. When I was taught, people in Colombia, I thought that it was impossible, and then there is this guy that is always working against everybody and proving that dreams come true. So I feel very happy to be here. And of course, it's nice to open new doors for new generations. ... If I'm making it, they can make it too. I feel very grateful for it. It's historic. We're all very, very excited.

Fragrance is about memory and emotion. If you had to describe your music as a scent, what would it be?

Well, I've been saying that for me, this fragrance is timeless, so I feel my music is timeless too. ... So maybe like leather, you know, I have a ranch in Colombia and this smell reminds me so much of the saddles where I ride my horses. And that's been like that forever, so timeless, saddles are timeless, my music, I wish or I hope it's gonna be timeless, so yeah, that's the word that of course, absolutely described the intentions of this [scent] and on my music.

BOSS talks about boldness and self expressions, two things that you've embodied in your music. How do you continue to reinvent yourself without losing that authenticity?

I don't reinvent myself anymore. I I feel like I'm just waking up some parts of my spirit and my soul, my country, that were sleeping. I feel like I'm not trying to look for something different. I'm just trying to get focused on the things that I have inside of me. I don't want to keep evolving. ... I think it's the end of that way of reinventing myself. I just realized that this is the way I am and I don't have to look for things outside of me. Everything is inside of my brain, my soul, my heart, and my body. So I'm just trying to look for it inside of myself.

You've crossed over globally, not just in Latin music, but across and fashion. What does being a part of this campaign say about where you are in your career right now?

I feel like [BOSS] and I were very connected now. ... When I saw that I was working with Bradley, with Vinnie, and working with Bradley for me was such a beautiful experience also. I see Bradley as such a gentleman, and he's so humble and all this stuff. So I've been learning a lot about how he's having a dad life, you know what I mean? Now that I have a daughter and Bradley, he knows very good about it. So I feel like the brand sees Maluma as the family guy, as a partner, as a father, and not only as the musician, that just goes and he does his stadiums around the world. It's not only that, I feel like BOSS, they go a little bit further than that, and they look for me to just be myself, who I am and just to show my identity, which for me is very, very important. ...We love working together. I love working with the BOSS team, and also as I told before, working with Bradley and Vini was an amazing experience too.

And the final question, fans often connect to you because of your vulnerability and swagger. What message do you hope they take away from this new chapter with BOSS?

Well, I would say don't be afraid of life. I've been working on myself and I had like these panic attacks in November and my life changed, so mental health is something that for me, became a very important topic. It's my favorite topic to talk about. I do it all the time with my family, friends, my crew, my team. I would say that working in the things that make you feel afraid is the main thing. Like, don't be afraid. Sometimes feeling scared of something makes you just talk and take terrible decisions. So I would say that working on yourself, meditate, do yoga, waking up early in the morning, being grateful. That's something that works for me and maybe if I tell everyone, that's what I use my social media—TikTok, Instagram—[for]. I always like trying to leave these messages to my fans because I know that people are having lots of issues and issues that I have too, a normal thing, but we take the fright away from it and you know how to handle it. It helps for everyone. That would be the message. Meditate. Do you. Don't be afraid of life. Life is beautiful.
