The US Open is currently underway, and after a clip of a man snatching a signed hat out of the hands of a child went viral, the internet has worked its magic and identified the culprit.
On Thursday (August 28), Polish tennis star Kamil Majchrzak greeted fans and signed autographs at the US Open after he beat the No. 9 seed Karen Khachanov.
When Majchrazk took off his hat to hand it to a young boy in the stands, a guy standing next to the child grabbed the hat and stuffed it into a nearby woman’s bag. While the child cried and reached for the hat back, the man ignored him.
Several sources have confirmed the identity of the man who snatched the hat as millionaire Polish businessman Piotr Szczerek, the CEO of paving company Drogbruk. According to Financial Express, Szczerek turned off comments on his social media accounts after experiencing heavy backlash.
Though the moment ended up sour for the kid, Majchrazk ended up seeking out the kid to make things right. First, he shared screenshots of the moment on Instagram with the message, "After the match, I didn’t record that my cap didn’t get to the boy."
"Hey Guys, could you help me find the Kid from my match. If it’s you (or your parents see this), please send me a DM," he added, noting that he had enough caps to go around for everyone. Soon after, the child was identified.
Majchrzak met up with the child and posted about the link-up on Instagram. He posted a clip of the two talking together, along with a photo of them standing side-by-side. "Hello World, Together with Brock we wish you a great day!" he wrote.
This year’s US Open has had its fair share of tense moments on and off the court. On Wednesday (August 27), tennis players Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko got into a heated verbal altercation after the former won a match.
The fiery exchange of words began when Ostapenko told Townsend that she should apologize for a shot that clipped the top of the net but remained playable. After Townsend told her she didn’t have to say sorry, Ostapenko became frustrated and the two began arguing. Ostapenko eventually told Townsend, "You have no education," multiple times.
When asked what happened in a post-game interview, Townsend explained: "People get upset when they lose. Some people say bad things."
