Luka Dončić has signed a three-year, $165 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Bill Duffy of WME Basketball revealed the news to ESPN on Saturday (August 2). Dončić’s new deal has a player option in 2028 and keeps him out of the free agency race in 2027.
Dončić released a statement about the extension, expressing his excitement to keep playing for the Lakers.
"I'm really grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates and the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness since day one," Dončić said. "This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we're building together. I'm going to keep working as hard as I can to bring another championship to Los Angeles and to make Laker Nation proud.”
"This is just the beginning. I'm excited for what's ahead and to keep building something special with this team,” he added.
Dončić doubled down on his excitement with an announcement on social media, again expressing that he's excited at the prospect of bringing a championship to Los Angeles.
Dončić’s massive extension comes days after he debuted a dramatic body transformation for Men’s Health.
Dončić, who was previously listed at a weight of 230 pounds, has slimmed down to 210 pounds and looks considerably smaller and more chiseled. Considering that the Mavericks, who traded him earlier this year, were reportedly concerned about his fluctuating weight, the move has Lakers fans excited about the future and what he’ll accomplish with the team.
As for why he wanted to lose weight in the first place, Dončić revealed during a broadcast appearance at a New York and Yankees game that he just "needed a fresh start after everything that happened."
