Authorities in New Jersey have identified the victim of a weekend homicide asToraya Reid, the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, Reid was fatally shot on the morning of September 6 at the Paragon Apartment complex in Jackson Township. Police were called to the scene around 11 a.m. and discovered her unresponsive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
She was found "laying near the exit of the apartment complex," court documents state. The suspect, 29-year-old Shaquille Green, was allegedly seen fleeing the scene on foot. Officers located him "running on North New Prospect Road" before taking him into custody without incident. Green has been charged with murder along with multiple weapons violations.
"A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, identified Green – who has been in a dating relationship with Ms. Reid – as the individual responsible for her death," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
In a 2023 profile with MSP Magazine, Naz Reid spoke about being the middle child. He named his sisters, Toraya and Jakahya, saying, "My older sister is super protective, she treats us like she's our parent."
Jakahya expressed her grief on social media with a post calling the accused gunman a "coward" and said she prayed his loved ones never have to "experience this type of pain." In another message, she urged people to recognize her sister's identity beyond her NBA ties.
"My sister has a name," she wrote. "She is not just some girl, She's not just the [NBA superstar] sister. She has a name and that is Toraya Reid. Respect her (expletive) or don't mention her at all."
Condolences have also poured into Facebook posts shared by the siblings' mother, Anashia Reid Smith, as family and friends mourn the loss. Naz Reid grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey, before becoming a breakout success with the Timberwolves.
The 26-year-old signed a five-year, $125 million contract extension earlier this summer and is set to enter his seventh NBA season later this month. Training camp for Minnesota begins on September 29.
