Brittney Griner was ejected early in the second half on Wednesday, July 30, during the Atlanta Dream’s 88–85 road win over the Dallas Wings.
According to Sports Illustrated, the ejection occurred in the third quarter after two quick technical fouls were issued against Griner, the second of which resulted from contact with referee Angelica Suffren that caused the official to stumble, as reported by the game broadcast.
The sequence began less than a minute into the half with Atlanta leading 44–43, when Griner was called for a foul while battling for a rebound. She approached Suffren to dispute the call and received a technical.
As Suffren walked away, Griner followed. A Dream staffer tried to step in, and in the ensuing moment, Suffren was bumped. The broadcast stated Griner made contact, though the television angle was inconclusive and appeared to show the Atlanta staffer touching the referee.
Griner exited the floor with her head turned toward the official and shouted before heading to the locker room. The ejection capped a quiet outing for Griner, who finished with four points and four rebounds across 16 minutes before being tossed in the third.
Through her 12th WNBA season, Griner is averaging career lows in points (10.6), minutes (23.3), and rebounds (5.6). Despite the dip in individual production, the Dream improved to 16–11 with the win and moved within 1.5 games of the No. 2 seed in the playoff race.
The ejection follows an earlier in-season flashpoint involving Caitlin Clark. During a separate game, broadcast footage showed Griner reacting on the bench, which sparked online speculation that she used an expletive while referencing Clark’s race.
Griner addressed the chatter at the time, saying, “I know it wasn’t that because I wouldn’t use that type of language.”
The Dream closed out the night with a three-point victory in Dallas after Griner’s departure. No further disciplinary updates were immediately available at the time of the broadcast.
