Sydney Sweeney believes that it was "mainly girls" that disliked her bathwater-infused soap collaboration with Dr. Squatch.
A couple months before Sweeney's controversial "great jeans" campaign with American Eagle, the actress partnered with Dr. Squatch for a "Bathwater Bliss" soap made with Sweeney's actual bath water.
The 5,000 soap bars sold out in seconds upon release, with Sweeney calling the collector's item "weird in the best way" at the time. The soap is now available for resale with prices as high as $1,500.
But some thought the item was perverse, and in a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sweeney said that women were behind the anti-soap hate campaign.
"It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting," Sweeney told the publication. "They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater."
The actress was referring to her Euphoria co-star but also his infamous bathtub scene in 2023 black comedy Saltburn. Fans of the movie have concocted their own tributes to the scene, like a bathwater-themed homemade candle and cocktail. A limited edition Saltburn vinyl was also filled with gooey "bathwater."
On an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last January, Elordi smelled the candle, which he said "smells like a washing room" and "detergent."
The Dr. Squatch partnership didn't get Sweeney in half as much hot water as the American Eagle campaign, which led to her affiliation with the Republican party being exposed.
The advertisement was alleged to have promoted eugenics with its "great jeans" tagline and Sweeney's blond hair and blue eyes at the forefront.
In a statement, American Eagle defended the campaign, saying that it "always was about the jeans."
"We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone," the statement read.
