Nicole Kidman knows about the meme of her allegedly leaving her divorce lawyer's office after finalizing her 2001 split from Tom Cruise; the Academy Award-winning actress was actually shooting a film.
Kidman, who stars in A24's forthcoming erotic thriller Babygirl, spoke to British GQ for a profile where she discussed the aforementioned meme, along with others including her viral AMC advertisement and the 2022 Oscars clap. Her "divorce" meme repopularized in September after Jenna Dewan shared the image to her Instagram Stories after finalizing her divorce from Blink Twice star Channing Tatum.
"That was not me; that was from a film, that wasn’t real life. I know that image!" Kidman told GQ reporter Ben Allen. But over two decades after the photos were taken, it's unknown what movie they're from.
Kidman continued by calling the marriage dissolution storyline behind the picture "not true." The actress was married to Cruise, with whom she shares two adopted children, from 1990 to 2001. Kidman has been married to Keith Urban since 2006 and shares two daughters with the musician.
On the meme of her usual clap at the 2017 Oscars, Kidman had another justifiable explanation. "I’ve also seen the one where I’m clapping like that," she said. "’Cause I had a massive heavy borrowed ring on and it was really painful, and I was scared of wrecking the jewellery. Ha! There’s always something behind the actual images that go out there, right?"
Kidman also accepted the cultural phenomenon that is her dramatic AMC campaign. "Yeah, yeah," she told the publication. "Heartbreak feels good in a place like this.’ But I’ll do anything for cinema, so you can meme me as much as you want."
More Kidman memes may roll in after the December 25 theatrical debut of Babygirl, where she stars opposite Harris Dickinson.
