Austin Butler will star in Luca Guadagnino’s new adaptation of American Psycho for Lionsgate.

Contrary to earlier rumors that Jacob Elordi was under consideration for the role, 33-year-old Butler will portray the leading role of Patrick Bateman, Variety reports.

The adaptation, penned by Scott Z. Burns, will not be a remake of the iconic 2000 film starring Christian Bale. Instead, the new film will be an adaption of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel American Psycho.

Additional details, such as additional casting and a release date, have yet to be announced.

As explained by Variety, the original American Psycho film, set in the 1980s, featured Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street yuppie and serial killer.

Variety suggests Guadagnino, known for movies including Call Me By Your Name, will explore eroticism more than the original film’s horror satire.

Guadagnino recently completed filming After the Hunt with Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. His most recent films, Queer and Challengers, earned Golden Globes nominations including Best Actor for Daniel Craig (Queer).

Challengers’ nods include Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Score, and Best Actress for Zendaya.
