We’ve all seen how director Debbie Allen has blessed our televisions over the past five decades. Now, she’s making her way from the screens to the shelves.
On Friday, Oct. 17, Mattel announced a new Barbie Tribute doll crafted in the likeness of Allen.
“I am so excited to join the Barbie Tribute Collection,” said Allen in a statement. “From the time I was a young girl, I’ve been passionate about using my creative outlets to inspire and uplift others. That mission has guided me throughout my life, from my performances to founding the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, and it is such a joy to continue this journey alongside Barbie. My hope is that by sharing my story, young people see that their greatest gift to the world is sharing their own unique talents.”
Over the course of Allen’s illustrious career, the award-winning actor, dancer, singer, choreographer, director, producer, and author’s name has become synonymous with great television. As an actor, she is perhaps best known for starring in Fame, both the movie and the television show. She has also directed episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, A Different World, Grey’s Anatomy, That’s So Raven, Scandal, Insecure, and more.
In 1983, Allen became the first Black woman to win a Golden Globe for best actress in a television comedy or musical for her role as dancer and choreographer Lydia Grant on Fame’s television adaptation, reprising her role from the original movie. Her doll is designed to resemble the character. The doll is dressed in a shimmery, off-shoulder top which is cinched at the waist with a gold belt, completing the look with purple fringe pants and legwarmers.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Debbie Allen into the Barbie Tribute Collection,” said Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Mattel in a statement. “Like Barbie, she’s proof you don’t have to choose just one dream—you can be a dancer, actor, director, and more. Her trailblazing career and commitment to inspiring the next generation make her the perfect icon to honor.”
Allen’s Barbie tribute doll is available for purchase online through the Mattel shop and Amazon, and also in stores at Walmart and Target.
