Why Ayo Edeberi and Jeremy Allen White's 'The Bear' Characters Won't Date

Fans can't deny their on-screen chemistry, but the actors maintain their relationship is strictly platonic.

Though The Bear’s two lead actors have undeniable on-screen chemistry, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for a romantic storyline.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Ayo Edeberi — who plays sous chef Sydney on the restaurant-centric drama — said that fans have been rooting for Sydney to date Carmy — the restaurant’s head chef played by Jeremy Allen White. However, the Bottoms actress said the two will never be romantically involved — a stance she’s held since the show’s beginning.

“I feel like we’ve been saying since [Season] 1, but I don’t know if people are starting to believe us now,” Edeberi said. “I do think that like there’s something about seeing people where they’re really passionate or where they’re excelling at something, it can feel exciting and charged. It’s a hard thing to talk about because we never get it right. I don’t know, my job is to do the thing, and then how you interpret it is how you interpret it.”

She continued: “But I do think it’s professional, and I do think if anything were to happen, it would not be the show that we’re making. And I also think it would be so crazy. That man is crazy and that girl is a bad communicator! The restaurant would blow up in like three seconds if anything ever happened.”

Over the course of The Bear, Sydney and Carmy have seen each other through restaurant closures, renovations, and personal struggles, but there’s never been any indication their relationship is more than platonic.

The Bear first premiered in June 2022. Since its premiere, White has earned two Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Edeberi has also earned the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The show recently premiered its fourth season this past June. Shortly after the season premiere, The Bear was renewed for a fifth season.
