Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe... but not as Iron Man.

The 59-year-old will portray Doctor Doom aka Victor von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to release in May 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to drop in theaters in May of 2027. The two films will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.

The announcement was made at Marvel’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con.

"If we’re going to bring Doctor Doom to the screen — he is one of the most complex characters, most entertaining characters in all of fiction,” Joe Russo said. “If we’re going to do this … then we are going to need the greatest actor in the world.”

Downey last portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Spoiler alert: Stark died in that film.

“That four-movie run was incredible,” Anthony Russo said of the Avengers films, prior to the announcement that Downey would be returning as Doom, per The Hollywood Reporter. “And it left us really spent, with all of our emotions on the floor. In the time since, through a very special story, Joe and I have come to potentially see a road forward with you all.”

Stephen McFeely, who along with Christopher Markus and the Russos co-wrote previous Marvel films, will be returning to write the upcoming Avengers movies.

Side note: Both them shits better start with some fucking MF DOOM.

RIP.
