Gelo misses playing basketball, but it’s not completely out of his life.
The rapper, who played basketball throughout his childhood, high school, college, and professional levels, admitted how he feels about the sport during an interview with Nessa on Hot 97 (around the 16-minute mark) when asked whether he missed it.
“Yeah, I do play, though with my brothers and NBA players behind doors,” he admitted. “I’m in this music right now, though.”
Gelo continued on, explaining why he’s focused on music. “If the music is paying like that, and the people love it, I’m going to give them what they want,” he explained.
The former basketball player also made it clear that he didn’t just make the switch to rapping on a whim, too. “I used to worry about all hoops,” he claimed. “I was actually writing raps down and battling with my cousins.”
Gelo’s decision to start rapping instead of playing basketball has paid off tremendously. In addition to signing the astronomical $13 million dollar deal with Def Jam that shocked the internet earlier this year, he was also named a member of XXL’s Freshman Class of 2025.
Outside of music, Gelo has something else to be excited about — that his girlfriend, Rashida Nicole, is pregnant. Nicole took to Instagram to reveal that she’s carrying their first child, saying that she’s “grateful, terrified, anxious, nauseous, and HANGRY.”
Gelo is gearing up for the release of his debut studio album, League of My Own, on July 18. He’d previously announced that the LP was dropping on June 27th. So far, Gelo has confirmed that GloRilla will appear on the project.
