Brandy and Monica’s legendary hit song, “The Boy Is Mine,” has been revealed to have been inspired by The Jerry Springer Show.

Brandy and Monica let the world know about the origin of the song during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to talk about their recently announced reunion tour.

“I was a huge Jerry Springer fan,’ said Brandy (around the 49-second mark). “One of the topics was ‘The boy is mine,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh my God. Song idea. Let’s do this.’”

Elsewhere in their interview, Monica revealed that the two are planning on making more music together. “We’ll start working on some music immediately,” claimed Monica. “Then, we can just be promoting it when we’re on the road. But no studio tour bus. That’s for the rappers.”

Earlier this month, Brandy and Monica announced their first-ever ‘The Boy Is Mine’ co-headlining tour that kicks off on Oct. 15 in Cincinnati, OH, and wraps up on Dec. 7 in Houston, TX.

On CBS Mornings, Brandy and Monica spoke to Gayle King and other hosts about linking up more than two decades after their song hit the charts. “They were trying to get us to do a tour since '98,” said Brandy.

“It just finally felt like the right time.” Monica added. “It’s a musical marriage. When you start to go on a tour, especially of this caliber, we have to talk about everything.”

During the conversation, the two opened up about their once-tense relationship. “It started as nothing, but it really did turn into something,” Monica said. “There [were] a lot of people around.”

“The song didn’t help either. We were fighting over a boy,” added Brandy, prompting Monice to chime in. “We don’t even like the same type of boy,” she said.

Brandy and Monica will be joined by Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and 2025 American Idol winner Jamal Roberts on tour.
