Earl Sweatshirt Shows Process of Casting Impostor to Perform at Listening Party in "CRISCO" Video

Someone was enlisted to embody Earl's "overall essence" for the performance.

Earl Sweatshirt just dropped a new video for “CRISCO,” a song off his acclaimed Live Laugh Love album, and in it he confirms that an impostor was indeed enlisted to perform at a recent listening party.

“Earl was not looking forward to performing at his album listening party,” a message that appears on the screen at the top of the new video states. “Instead, we decided to cast someone to embody his overall essence on stage. We filmed the whole process behind the label’s back. Sorry.”

Complex was on hand for the listening party in question. At the time, we raised a few questions about the performance, which ultimately saw a gentleman by the name of Gary Murakami taking the stage to perform Earl tracks.

The Jimmy Regular-directed new video walks fans through the entire process, complete with an appearance by Earl’s mother. Our star, Gary, is decked out in a ton of Supreme and given a crash course in how best to channel Earl through a variety of research-minded tasks including a studio session and a “smoke break intensive.” Various “side missions” were also employed, with Gary at one point seen taking notes during an actual Earl performance.

Experience “CRISCO,” starring Gary Murakami as Earl Sweatshirt, up top. Footage for the undeniably hilarious visual experience was captured by Jimmy Regular, Zack Fox, and Nate Guenther.

ComplexCon returns to Las Vegas on October 25–26, 2025, with over 300 brands and live performances by Young Thug, YEAT & Friends, Peso Pluma, Central Cee, Ken Carson, and more. Get your tickets now.
