DDG Questions the Emphasis Placed on First-Day Streams: 'What Has the Music Industry Become?'

"How about we start enjoying music for what music is? Art," DDG said.

DDG, whose latest album Moo was recently reported to have earned around 563,000 streams during its first day of release, is questioning the emphasis placed on such numbers in the music industry.

“This music shit done got so bad that n***as is talking about first-day streams, bro,” DDG said during a recent stream. “Come on, bro. Like, Jesus. What has the music industry become? I remember back in the day, it was about music being nostalgic and being a part of a moment in your life. I listen to certain albums and it brings me back to when I was a kid.”

DDG went on to argue that it’s all a mere numbers game now, which he sees as antithetical to the inherent value of art at large.

“Nowadays, it’s all about who can get the most numbers and who can get the most streams,” he said, as seen below. “How about we start enjoying music for what music is? Art. Last time I checked, when I think of art I never thought of a number.”

As the clip above started making the rounds, DDG responded to an X user who said that his latest project “isn’t art” by arguing “ur poor bro, who cares.” DDG also declared the album in question, Moo, the “best” of the year.

On “17 More Years,” a track off the new album, DDG seemingly addresses his and Halle Bailey’s ongoing custody battle.
