Legendary dancehall artist Sean Paul weighed in on Drake's much-debated Jamaican accent, and he didn't hold back.
During an appearance on REAL 92.3 LA, the Grammy-winning star was asked for his honest opinion on the Canadian rapper's occasional patois. Paul admitted that while he appreciates Drake's embrace of Jamaican culture, the execution doesn't quite hit the mark.
"Probably what he thinks of my North American accent. Probably the same thing," Paul said with a laugh. "It ain't that great. ... But it's a thing. It's a thing, man. You know, I mean, I'm proud that our culture has big players in the game loving it and wanted to say that. So, I'm not going to fight dude down for that."
The interviewer noted that many listeners have the same reaction, pointing out that Drake's patois often "sound kind of funny" and "crazy," adding, "No sound authentic now."
Paul's comments came right after he recalled a similar experience with another hip-hop legend, Snoop Dogg, who sometimes playfully refers to him in a different accent, calling him "Shamp."
Paul's comments might draw a reaction from Drake, who tends to give his own two cents when veteran artists mention him. Earlier this month, Drake shared an Instagram post with the caption, “Oh nice…more unsolicited advice from rappers we loved in 2005."
Some fans speculated that Drake was giving an indirect response to comments made by Memphis Bleek, who released his 534 album in May 2005. In an interview with Shannon Sharpe, Bleek spoke on how Drake was moving in his feud with Kendrick Lamar, including taking legal action against UMG.
