Freddie Gibbs is the latest rapper to weigh in on the growing use of artificial intelligence in music, especially hip-hop.
During his conversation on The Ryen Russillo Podcast, Gibbs voiced his strong concerns about how artists are increasingly leaning on the technology to create their music. According to Gibbs, he's in a space where he can't fully believe an artist wrote their own material, as he's seen several people using ChatGPT to craft their rhymes.
"Look at AI rap now man," said Gibbs. "I don't even believe nobody that write [...] I don't even believe if you even really make it anymore cause I done been in studios with motherfuckers and mutherfuckers is ChatGPT shit and I'm like, ‘What in the fuck?' Like damn, how long am I gonna be able to do this shit? Cause I'm actually making fresh shit."
He continued, "How long am I going to be able to do it when there's muthafuckers in the studio typing into a computer to get their music [...] We in a lazy day and age, man. Heart is dying and you got to ask a computer to write your lyrics, shit is wack."
Gibbs' comments reflect a wider conversation in hip-hop and beyond as artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT are increasingly seeping into the music industry. While some see AI as a tool for brainstorming and efficiency, others, such as Gibbs, believe it strips away authenticity and the raw emotion that has always been central to music.
17-year-old Chicago rapper BabyChiefDoIt recently caught heat after a comment he made led fans to believe he used ChatGPT to write his own lyrics. Earlier this month, the rapper visited Power 105.1 and admitted he recently downloaded the app and used it to write his lyrics.
"That shit works," he said before revealing he prompted the technology to write a song after putting four bars together. "Now I ain't use it, you know, exactly how it was written, but it was some, you know, some some shit that I could pull out of."
After catching heat for his comments, Baby sent another message out on his Instagram Stories, saying, "If ChatGPT was the solution 2 all my problems Y in the absolute f#ck would I give yall the sauce."
