Russell Wilson's advice to a young cancer patient to undergo stem cell therapy was praised by his wife, Ciara.
The CiCi artist stopped by radio station Power 106 Los Angeles on Wednesday (September 10) and discussed her philanthropy alongside her husband of nine years, whom she shares four children with. Her eldest, Future Wilson, is shared with Ciara'a ex-boyfriend, rapper Future.
Around the 15:30 minute mark of the video below, Ciara talked about her and Wilson's foundation, Why Not You, and said that the New York Giants quarterback has "defied many odds."
"We're so blessed that we get to do life together and we get to impact together and that's one thing we love doing," Ciara said. "We love being able to provide opportunities for kids to live their dreams."
One of those children was Milton Wright, who was diagnosed with cancer, who Wilson "convinced" to try stem cell therapy.
"And this kid did not want to try it. He had twelve hours left to live," the singer recalled. "Russ went in and talked to him and convinced him, 'Hey, kid,' told him his story about losing his father, everything. Before you know it, the kid changed his mind, got up and was like, 'I want to do it.'"
Ciara added that Wright's experience encouraged him to tell other children with cancer to give stem cell therapy a chance. "So you think about the power in that, it's such a blessing," Ciara said.
In 2016, the same year that Wilson married Ciara, the athlete wrote an op-ed on Wright for The Players Tribune, calling the then-nineteen-year-old an "amazing" person.
Milton and his family had to decide whether to call back the T-cells or not. The thing was, it was his last chance at a cure.
"When I sat by his bed and looked into his eyes, I could tell he had accepted the possibility of death. But he was really scared," Wilson wrote about Wright. "What can you possibly say in that moment? There are no words. So I did the only thing I could. I told him about my father."
Wilson added that his late father, Harrison Wilson III, had a "long battle with diabetes" and after being placed in a coma, he "kept on fighting for two more years" until his passing in 2010.
The doctors didn’t expect him to have any motor function in those years. But he kept on smiling, even when he couldn’t speak. He kept rooting me on when I took the field in college.
"He was still my dad. His spirit was still there. And it’s still here with me to this day. So I told Milton to keep fighting like my dad did," Wilson wrote.
