Album titles are an important part of conveying the message and themes behind a certain project. Think about The Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die or Jay-Z's The Blueprint. An album title can provide a hint for the listener about what they're going to hear on the album. However, there are many instances where album titles don't paint an accurate picture for the listener. Obviously, artists take creative licenses with their work, so album titles aren't meant to always be taken literally. But there are some album titles that we just can't forgive. Whether it's Drake pretending everything is now different, Amil encouraging criminal activity, or Iggy Azalea not understanding the definition of the word "classic," some artists should have invested a little more time in naming their LP's. Run-D.M.C. King of Rock (1985)
Run-D.M.C. frequently referred to themselves as the “Kings of Rock.” Thing is, Run-D.M.C. is a rap group. One of the most influential rap groups of all-time. While they did break down genre walls with their “Walk this Way” collabo with Aerosmith, and incorporate rock elements in this album, it's still two turntables and two microphones.
De La Soul De La Soul Is Dead (1991)
Posdnuos is 45, Dave is 46, and Maseo is 44. All three members of De La Soul are alive and well, and, according to their website are performing January 15 at Promontory in Chicago. So hey, if you've got tickets to this show, these dudes are still alive so don't worry.
Fat Joe Jealous Ones Envy (1995)
“Jealousy” and “envy” are two distinct emotions. Envy is when someone else has something you want, jealousy is when someone threatens something you already have. We're pretty sure this album title was chosen simply because it's an acronym for Joe.
Jermaine Dupri Life in 1472 (1998)
What does Jermaine Dupri know about “Life in 1472?” Well, he was born in 1972 and this album came out in 1998. So we're gonna assume not a whole lot.
Dr. Dre 2001 (1999)
Curiously, Dr. Dre titled his sophomore album, released in 1999, 2001. Not 2000, not 1999, not The Chronic 2, but 2001. Did Dr. Dre know something about 2001 that the rest of us didn't in 1999? At this rate, Dre is going to have the change the title of Detox to 2050 because it's unlikely we will see it before that.
Amil All Money Is Legal (2000)
Has there ever been an album title more inaccurate than Amil's All Money is Legal? Because guess what, Amil, all money is not legal. Let's say you made all of your money by importing cocaine and guns, said money would not be legal. Now, the money Amil earned when she was said to have been working at Macy's after leaving the music…
Ja Rule Pain Is Love (2001)
Ja Rule must have been on that Fifty Shades of Grey flow early. If he thought love was pain, we can't imagine how much love he felt when he was sentenced to prison.
Slim Thug Already Platinum (2005)
Slim Thug's Already Platinum sold a total of 0 copies before it was released on July 12, 2005. Once it was released, it managed to sell over 500,000 copies…which means it still didn't go platinum. Some more appropriate album titles might have been Gold After Release, Almost Platinum, or Already In-Stores.
Nas Hip-Hop Is Dead (2006)
For what it's worth, this is a great album title since the title was Nas' entire marketing plan. That said, it's 2014 and hip-hop is still alive.
El-P I'll Sleep When You're Dead (2007)
Considering this album came out seven years ago, we're gonna go ahead and assume El-P has snuck in a power nap or two waiting for us to keel over.
Kardinal Offishall Not 4 Sale (2008)
Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall's Not 4 Sale went on-sale on September 9, 2008. The album sold less than 100,000 copies. As to why he chose that album title, Kardinal said at the time of the album's release, “There's energy you can't buy—the essence of people that can't be bought or bottled, and lives within them. That's how I feel about myself—I can't be bought.” No truer words have been spoken.
Lil Wayne I Am Not a Human Being (2010)
Sorry, Lil Wayne, but you are definitely a human being. Now, if the album had been called I Am Not Being Paid by Cash Money, that's something we could have actually believed.
Rick Ross God Forgives, I Don't (2012)
We all know Rick Ross isn't the criminal overlord he claims to be in his raps and that he's fibbed about his past. But, come on, we were at least willing to believe that Ross didn't forgive those who crossed him. Then Ross squashed his beef with Young Jeezy last year, after years of turmoil. A better title would have been, God Forgives and I Do Too!
Nas Life Is Good (2012)
This is not a factual album title. Here's a factual song title, though: “Life's A Bitch.”
Drake Nothing Was the Same (2013)
Same singing. Same emotional Drake. Same “songs for the females.” Same “songs for the fellas.” Same average Jay-Z guest appearance. More than a year later, everything is the same.
DJ Mustard 10 Summers (2014)
Is DJ Mustard saying that he hopes to still be here 10 summers from now? He must be, right? 'Cause he surely hasn't been killing it for 10 summers. By our count he only has one under his belt.
Flying Lotus You're Dead (2014)
What? I am? I feel alive…I mean, I'm breathing. How does Flying Lotus know I'm dead? This is concerning me. Should I visit a doctor?
Travi$ Scott Days Before Rodeo (2014)
To hold over fans waiting for his proper debut, Rodeo, Travi$ Scott dropped this mixtape on August, 18 2014. Great tape. One problem: It came out not days, but months before the album. Remember: the Calendar app is your friend.
Pitbull Globalization (2014)
“Globalization” is defined as “a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology.” Pitbull's Globalization album is about “Fireballs,” “Day Drinking,” and “Fun.”
Iggy Izalea The New Classic (2014)
Putting the word "classic" in your album title immediately conjures up thoughts of Illmatic or Ready to Die. Nothing leading into this album suggested Iggy would be delivering a classic and the results were anything but.
