Mariah Carey is known to wear her heart on her sleeve — in her music and in daily conversation. And as she’s gearing up for her new album Here for it All, the Grammy-winning powerhouse is opening up about the events that led up to the project.

In an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings that aired on Wednesday, September 24, Carey spoke with King about the death of her mother Patricia, and her sister Alison — both of whom died on August 24, 2024. Carey had long been open about her complicated relationship with her family, however, she revealed that she and her mother were on good terms before her passing.

“I don't know how I processed it,” Carey said. “I just know that it was extremely difficult for me to navigate and it was tough because I have always had an interesting relationship with my mother.”

Carey continued, revealing that she was with her mother the whole time in the hours leading up to her death. She also noted that she hadn’t seen her sister in years before she died. “I feel really badly about that as well, but that's ‘cause I tend to have a guilt complex about everything, but it's tough. My sister had an extremely hard life."

When asked by King if she felt she had made peace with her mother, Carey responded: “I do, she said a couple of things to me that were very healing for what I needed and I felt that that was the right thing to do.”

Fans can expect Carey to lay it all out on the table on Here for it All, which marks her 16th studio album. Here for it All arrives to stores and digital platforms on Friday, Sept. 26.
