At least 10 people were killed and 35 injured after a man drove a pickup truck and plowed his way through New Orleans' Bourbon Street on New Year's Eve.
New Orleans Police Department Supt. Ann Kirkpatrick said the driver drove past police barricades and was shooting at police with an assault rifle after crashing the vehicle. Police returned fire and killed the suspect. Two officers were shot but are in stable condition.
The suspect, who was shot and killed by police, has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar of Texas. The FBI confirmed an ISIS flag was found in his vehicle, which was a rental car that was listed on the car sharing platform Turo.
"This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could. It was not a DUI situation. This is more complex and more serious based on the information we have right now," Kirkpatrick, per CNN.
Authorities also reported finding improvised explosive devices in the area of the crime scene. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the incident as a "terrorist attack," and the FBI said it was being investigated as an act of terror.
President Biden was briefed on the news and vowed to offer support to the investigation.
"The FBI is already on the ground supporting local law enforcement in the investigation and the President will continue to be briefed throughout the day," the White House said in a statement.
