President-elect Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to delay the Jan. 19 decision to ban TikTok in the U.S.
On Friday, Dec. 27, Trump submitted a legal filing asking for a delay so that his administration could "pursue a negotiated resolution" to the TikTok ban. Trump's filing is in direct competition with the Biden administration, who wrote in a briefing on Friday that TikTok poses a "grave" threat to national security.
TikTok also filed a briefing in which the company argued the Supreme Court should not accept the new law that will see the popular app banned in the United States on Jan. 19 unless a new buyer purchases the app.
"President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider staying the Act's deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case," read Trump's filing.
The Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments to take place on Jan. 10 regarding the TikTok ban and will weigh whether it violates the First Amendment. Over two dozen briefings have been submitted to the Supreme Court from groups representing both sides of the issue.
Trump's filing comes after he tried to ban TikTok during his first presidency over national security concerns. However, Trump and his team used the app during his presidential campaign to win over young voters.
Earlier this year, Trump said he still felt there were national security concerns with TikTok but vowed he wouldn't support a ban on the platform. He also met with TikTok CEO Shou Chew in Mar-a-Lago earlier this month.
