French authorities continue to investigate the death of Jean Pormanove, a well-known French streamer who died during a recent live broadcast.
The suspicious death has since made countless international headlines and shed more light on the trend of "trash streaming" — a disturbing genre of online content in which people perform dangerous, shocking and violent acts.
How did Jean Promanove die?
According to the New York Times, prosecutors cited an autopsy Thursday (August 21) that found the probable cause of death was medical and/or toxicological.
Authorities confirmed medical examiners located bruises and healed lesions on 46-year-old Pormanove (real name Raphaël Graven) but believed his death "was not traumatic in origin" or "related to the intervention of a third party."
Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli said French authorities also found evidence that Promanove had previously received treatment for heart and thyroid issues. An official cause of death has not been confirmed.
What abuse did Jean Promanove suffer on livestream?
According to BBC News, Martinelli said investigators have also interviewed multiple people who were present at the time of Promanove’s tragic livestream. They’ve also seized equipment and videos in the hopes of finding more information on the events leading up to his death.
Promanove appeared in a Kick livestream that had been running for nearly 300 hours. The broadcast took a dark turn when two men in the room noticed Promanove was lying in bed, unconscious.
French government minister Clara Chappaz called the tragedy an "absolute horror," adding that Promanove had been subjected to on-air mistreatment and humiliation "for months."
CNN obtained videos in which Promanove’s fellow streamers appeared to throttle him, shoot him with paintballs and douse him with water. The outlet noted it’s unclear if the violent acts were staged or if Promanove voluntarily subjected himself to the violence.
Promanove was known for his gaming content and "extreme challenges." He had garnered more than a half a million followers across his social media platforms.
"A judicial investigation is underway. I have referred the matter to Arcom and made a report on Pharos," Chappaz added on X. "I have also contacted the platform’s management to obtain explanations. The responsibility of online platforms regarding the dissemination of illicit content is not optional: it is the law. This type of failure can lead to the worst and has no place in France, Europe, or anywhere else."
Are Drake and Adin Ross paying for Promanove’s funeral?
Shortly after Promanove’s death was announced, streamer Adin Ross claimed he and Drake had agreed to cover the streamer's funeral costs.
"This is horrible and disgusting," Ross wrote on X. "Whoever was [sic] apart of this deserves to face severe consequences. I just spoke with drake. Drake and I will be covering the funeral costs, this won’t bring his life back, it’s the least we can do. Prayers go out to Jean’s family."
