Two separate shootings at South Carolina State University on October 4 led to a campus lockdown and a woman's death.
On October 5 at noon Central Time, the university still had a lockdown alert on its website. "Shots fired at Hugine Suites," the university wrote, referring to a campus dorm. That's even though the shootings occurred on the evening of October 4, according to USA Today.
"The South Carolina State University campus is on lockdown following a shooting," the alert says.
"All Homecoming events scheduled for Sunday have been canceled. If you are not a current student, please do not attempt to come to campus. Public Safety has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate," it adds.
"Hugine Suites residents who are not in the complex report to SHM. Anyone in Hugine Suites stay put. Students in other residence halls return to your rooms. Off-campus residents, please exit the campus," the university's alert says.
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division told USA Today that there was also a second shooting that was not related to the residence hall incident. The shootings left one woman dead and a man injured, the news site reported.
"The shootings are not believed to be connected at this time, however, SLED’s investigations are active and ongoing," SLED told USA Today.
According to ABC4, the pair of shootings occurred during the public university's Homecoming celebrations.
The shooting at Hugine Suites left a "female guest visiting campus" deceased and a "male guest" injured. A third person was injured while running away, according to ABC4. However, USA Today reported that the male was injured in a second shooting, so some details were contradictory as the incidents were fresh.
Suspect names and motives have not been released. The names of the victims and the condition of the surviving victims also had not been released. Authorities also had not yet released the sequence of events or how the shootings exactly unfolded.
