The FBI has asked for the public's help with identifying a person of interest after the fatal shooting of right-wing political figure Charlie Kirk.

On Thursday (Sept. 11), the Salt Lake City-based FBI released photographs of the person of interest taken via surveillance after the shooting at Utah Valley University.

Minutes after the shooting, an older man was escorted away by police, but he was found to not be the suspect and released.

Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder of conservative nonprofit Turning Point USA, was speaking at the educational institution in Orem, Utah, on the first date of his America Comeback Tour when gunfire rang out.

Videos reviewed by Complex showed the pundit getting shot in the neck once and slumping backward. Kirk was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Just seconds before Kirk was shot, he was answering a question by an attendee of his event.

"Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America in the last 10 years?" the person asked.

"Counting or not counting gang violence?" Kirk responded before he was struck by a bullet.

Kirk's passing has riled up people on social media, many of whom believe that his death was ironic considering his stance on gun rights. Others considered his killing horrific and called for people not to joke about it.

Politicians including President Donald Trump, former President Barack Obama, and former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris extended their sympathies to Kirk's loved ones.

"Charlie was a patriot who devoted his life to the cause of open debate and the country that he loved so much, the United States of America," Trump said. "He fought for liberty, democracy, justice, and the American people. He's a martyr for truth and freedom. And there's never been anyone who was so respected by youth."

Kirk had been married to Miss Arizona USA pageant winner Erika Frantzve since 2021. Frantzve, along with the couple's two children, were attending the event where he was killed.
