A mass shooting occurred at a Mississippi high school homecoming game this weekend, leaving four dead and several injured.

As reported by TMZ, the shooting took place around midnight on Friday (October 10) in downtown Leland, Mississippi, during the homecoming weekend for Leland High School vs. Charleston High School.

Four people died at the scene while 12 others were injured. Although a suspect hasn't been named, 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe was taken into custody, per Desoto County News.

"I extend my condolences to the families and to those injured. This has never happened before in our town, we're known for getting along well with each other," stated the town's mayor John Lee.

According to independent Mississippi news outlet Dark Horse Press, the small town is home to a population of less than 4,000 with a police force of "less than 10 officers." Washington County Supervisor Mala Brooks told the outlet that at the homecoming block party, she noticed a group of visitors who were carrying backpacks and "stuck out like a sore thumb."

"And people were just walking around enjoying themselves, not knowing what was about to happen," Brooks said.

"In Leland, we don’t have this type of problem here," she continued. "Leland is a wonderful place to stay. It’s so unfortunate that people from outside of our community came and shot up our town."
