A mass shooting erupted in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, leaving two people dead and at least 12 others injured.

According to TMZ, the violence broke out on Saturday (Oct. 4) around 11:30 p.m. in a crowded nightlife district, shortly after crowds had gathered following the Tuskegee University vs. Morehouse College football game.

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys described the incident to reports as a “mass shooting.”

“This was two parties involved that were basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd,” said Graboys, per CNN. “[The shooters] did not care about the people around them when they did it.”

TMZ reports that the incident began with a fight between rival groups, which escalated into a running gun battle through packed streets.

Among the deceased was a woman, and two children were among the injured—one critically. WSFA reported that three victims including the child are "in life-threatening condition."

No arrests had been made as of early Sunday and investigators were still gathering evidence and interviewing potential suspects.

“We will do everything we need to gather every bit of evidence to chase down whoever is involved,” Graboys said.
